10 Special Ways to Turn to Your Spouse

Sometimes, we love to share great resources written by our friends!  today’s guest colomn is from Charlotte and Gordy Guest, authors of a lovely, beautiful, practical and biblical devotional from Christian Arts, “A Little More Room For Us: 100 Devotionals for the Empty Nest Couple. “We know you will enjoy this pracitical and helpful blog to fan the flame on your love!(Yes! Even after the kids have launched!)

From the Guests: Our whole marriage, we’ve slept the same way: one of us on the right side, the other on the left. Just recently, we made a switch. Our old way of sleeping meant we turned away from each other. Now, as we drift off to sleep, we can hold hands. When we first wake up, each other’s face is the first thing we see. Switching sides of the bed was small thing, but it has drawn us even closer.

Turning to each other helps prevent drifting from each other.

HERE ARE TEN SUGGESTIONS OF OTHER SPECIAL
WAYS YOU CAN TURN TO YOUR SPOUSE:

1. TURN TOWARD THEM FIRST

Reach for their hand before your phone in the morning. Prioritize each other’s presence.

2. TURN TOWARD THEIR WORDS

Face each other when talking. Look each other in their eyes and focus on listening well. Listen to understand, not just to respond.

3. TURN TOWARD SURPRISING THEM

Leave them little notes for each other. A note left on the counter, in the car, under a pillow or tucked in a suitcase goes a long way. An “I love you” written in red ink with a little heart can feel like a hug, so can finding a favorite treat.

4. TURN TOWARDS THEIR JOYS

Ask more questions about things they love like a hobby they have or a book they are reading.

5. TURN TOWARDS THEIR STRUGGLES

Sit beside your spouse in hard seasons. Ask how to best love and support them through a tough time instead of offering suggestions to fix it.

6. TURN TOWARDS GRATITUDE

Tell them one thing you appreciate about them each day. Say “thank you” often.

7. TURN TOWARD FORGIVENESS

Don’t let small hurts become lasting distance.

8. TURN TOWARD LAUGHTER

Find reasons to smile and laugh together, even on ordinary days.

9. TURN TOWARD SHARED MOMENTS

Eat a meal without distractions, take a walk, or watch the sun rise or set together. Take turns planning a date night.

10. TURN TOWARD PRAYER

Pray with and for each other every day. Hold hands as you do and thank God for your marriage and time together.

Marriage doesn’t drift apart because of one big moment…it’s usually because of one small turn away at a time. In the same way, your marriage will grow stronger one small turn toward each other at a time.

Turn toward your love for each other in the little and big things. The smallest changes can create the deepest connections.

“Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.”

Hebrews 10:24

Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers a multitude of sins.”

1 Peter 4:8

Have fun as you make these turns! We’ll be praying for you.

With love,
Charlotte and Gordy
